Artist Spotlight - Bridget Meyne

Artist Spotlight - Bridget Meyne

Bridget M - maker of fierce, female comics.

We first met Bridget at one of the events she helps organise, Brighton Illustration Fair, or BIF for short, and fell in love with the illustration style. I think her confident line-work and wonderful character design is what appealed the most, and we've been big fans of her work ever since.

As well as being part of the BIF team, Bridget has also done a lot of work for The Illustrated Mind  who make t-shirts and get a whole heap of great artists to create great designs for them!
Here's one of Bridget's designs for Illustrated Mind -

So what's she made for us?

As with all our previous featured Artists we wanted to give Bridget free-reign with her ideas, and she made this superb illustration which we felt would look totally amazing on tote bags! We're really stoked about it, we love how Bridget's interpreted the sad ghost character and the general vibe she's created, whilst still being inspired by SGC. It's ace. And pretty cool, cooler than us tbh.

We're tote-ally pleased with this product and think Bridget did a bang-up job. Hope you ghosties like them as much as we do! They're available to purchase now over on the store.

Okay, so on to the questions!

1) What's your favourite fictitious Ghost from popular media?
Angela from Night of the Demons!

2) What's the best item in your pencil case?
I think it's probably my actual pencil case, which is shaped like a giant sparkly lipstick. Or I have these double ended Japanese pens that I'm obsessed with.

3) Paint? Pencil? or Tablet?
I usually use pencil, then pen (and ink sometimes) and then colour digitally on tablet.

4) What's your go-to motivational album?
Gliss Riffer by Dan Deacon! Or anything by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is good for motivation too.

5) How would you describe your work? Are there any common themes?
All my drawings are very figurative- I like to draw people best. A lot of my work is humour based, so I make short comics based on people I've overheard or cheap jokes, anything that makes me laugh really. I read a lot, including trash magazines like Take A Break, so that kind of shock humour/gore/absurdity finds it's way in as a theme.

6) What’s your proudest piece that you've worked on?
That's a hard one- I usually love what I do for a week and then end up hating it! I love making books and zines, so I always prefer my work in that form. So maybe Gym Boiz.

7) Do you have any/many artist rituals?
Not really! Apart from drinking lots of tea and distracting myself. I force myself to listen to podcasts now so I'm not watching stuff at the same time.

8) What motivates you?
Being better! And I find the process of drawing really relaxing. Also whenever I get a good reception to my work it always spurs me on to do more.

9) What do you do, that you think no one else does whilst working?
I have rats and I let them run around when I'm drawing. I also eat incredible amounts of cheese.

10) Who are you inspired by?
I find most inspiration in artists I like- I love the work of Lala Albert, who paints beautiful alien women and has done some great comics and a great book called Janus. And I love Will Laren too, who always cracks me up.

12) What's your favourite way to practice self care? (Especially after a busy week!)
Having a bath and watching things in it! Also I am obsessive about making to do lists and plans and anything that helps me feel productive.
